Rookie Question - I had a problem at my best account this week all the diet coke tasted as if it had very little syrup in it. I also noticed that date on the bottom of the can was JanO807. I buy soda every week so know this was not in inventory, I use VSA / Sam's. Is the date an expiration date or a mnufacture date.

Thoughts and Guidance ?

Usually dates on products are expiration dates. I would talk to your local Sam's Club to verify what the date means. I would return it if you purchased it after the expiration date, which I assumed you did. I am sure they will refund your money or provide you w/ replacement product. I know that diet sodas do not have as long a shelf life as regular sodas.

2 things about diet drinks, they can't take heat, and they last 3 mths. Check your code dates before purchase, there stamped on the bottom of each can, normally all you have to do is lift one six pack in a case and ck the date, if the date is good on the six pack, so will the case be, and if's on top of the pallet, normally the whole pallet is good. Also food for thought, most 20 oz drinks only have 3 mths.

I'll second that! Heat causes aspartame to break down. When I bought my soda vending route, the seller gave me a garage full (~50 cases) of soda for free. The sugar/corn syrup drinks tasted fine, but the diet drinks tasted like seltzer. He stored them in a Las Vegas garage in 110 degree heat! I tested some diet drinks that were in the machines on location and ended up pulling them all.

Sam's Club isn't always very prudent about date codes in snacks either. I once bought a case of Funyuns that were 3 weeks out of code right off the shelf. They were very nice though about exchanging it for fresh, but I have noticed other out of code stock almost every time I shop there, so beware!

Monitoring expiration dates is really critical on items that have a short shelf life. For instance, diet sodas, chips, cookies. I still think that Sam's is better vendor operators (especially us smaller businesses) than anywhere else. I have developed a good rapport w/ my local Sam's Club. They go out of there way to get items that my customer requests. I have discovered that if you have questions and/or problems, they are more than willing to assist you. Anyway, that has been my experience.

I don't want to get started on the horrors of Aspartame... Me personally, I don't stock any diet drinks unless it's sweetened with Sucralose (Splenda) and my locatations have thanked me for it... However, I don't usually have a problem with the heat since I store my "inventory" in my house... I only have a couple of drink locations so I don't need to stock much...

I'm curious though if anyone here has had the same problem with diet drinks sweetened with Splenda...
