I have been getting calls about moths in my peanuts. I recently changed from "Planters Large Virginia" to "Planters Dry Roasted" to get away from problems with oil in the machine. One customer claims he saw a small worm in the nuts and when I went to service 2 moths were in the container.
HELP

I dont run nuts anymore but I have heard that there is a certain amount of "living material" in nuts. The warm "stagnant" air inside the globes help to accelerate the incubation of these critters. I have been told that if you freeze any nut material overnight and allow to thaw before placing them in your machine you should have no further problems.

This advice came from a fellow vending friend of mine who had this same problem. It seems to have ended his problem. Try this at your own risk however since I have no first hand knowledge.

Is that really true with there being bug eggs in the nuts because i had the same thing happen to me 2 months ago with planters cashews. I also could have been that some one cracked the plastic on my xyz tri vend. I tell you that was the worst 2 hours of my life cleaning that machines out they were in every inche and crack of the machine. Also if i freeze the nuts when i get them will that effect the taste or the way they look.

I'm not sure about the moths and worms. This is just what I've heard and been told but you never know. Like I said, I have no first hand knowledge. Here are a couple of excerpts from a nut website I found. Yeah, the have a website for nuts!

Storing Nuts

Nuts are high in oil and so can become rancid or stale if not stored right. If left to their own devices, they can also become wormy.

Freezing Nuts

Freezing nuts keeps them much longer. Avoid freezer burn or they can become pithy.

Update on Moths in Nuts:

They're everywhere. We have had at least 15 machines with moths in the nuts. I am using Planters Dry roasted, and the moths appear to hatch out of small cocoons on the nuts. We probably have 200 machines with these nuts in them and I need a solution. I have bagged the nuts from an infected machine and removed the moths. 2 days later 3 more moths had hatched with the ziplock bag in the seat of my truck. I have used the Planters Large Virginia nuts in oil as well as Planters Cashews and Mixed Nuts w/o any problems. I'm replacing these dry nuts as we go, but would love a solution since the dry nuts are neater and seem to sell better.

Any one else have any input?

I had to load up one of my machines today, had moths inside from Peanut MMs, dont think the cleints noticed it. It was not a busy location anyway.
Went home, took it all apart cleaned it then placed at another location that broke my lock out few months back. It was a darn good location, so will take a chance with them again, maybe the theif is not with them anymore.
I will experiment with a small amount of PMM in the freezer overnight and give them a officail taste test.
