I am looking to get a small route to supplement my income. Just on an average, how many snack machines would I be looking at to gross $1,500 a month?

That is a very difficult question to answer. There are many locations that do this by themselves in one month and even substantially more, but the full service companies fight tooth and nail for them. There are lots of smaller accounts that you can pick up fairly easily that will do $200-$400 per month (gross) and there are tons in between. You just have to do the math once you know where you think you want to be.

Why vend snacks only? It would be sheer happenstance to find an account that would want you to do just snacks. Just about any account you walk into will have single vendor doing both soda and snacks.

I'm assuming you mean soda and snacks and not just snacks as your question indicates. In which case, Scottgtt gave you excellent advice.
