Thank you very much for your help. I guess the main worry that I have is do people really pay for what they want? How do you avoid from people just taking items without paying for them? I know it may seem like a stupid question but it's a really worry that I have.
of course some people will steal if you get to much theft dont bring another box back to that location. but in general people are more honest than you might think. i try to put between $4-7.00 of product in my boxes so if i lose the box i am not risking very much money. if they pay everything and empty the box i should collect $30-35 so thats pretty good pay off. part of it is pricing ur products higher than you would in a vending machine for example i price everything at $1 so if someone steals chocolate that costs me $0.40 but someone else pays for $1.00 chps that costs me 0.20 cents i am still ahead. i would not accept > 40% loss. also a good tip is to foster a good genial relationship with someone at the location specifically someone in charge. a manager or an owner. dont tell them they have to be responsible for the losses but ask them just try to keep an eye on the box for you and offer them a free snack now and then. Addditionally when my loss starts increasing at a location i put a big red note on the box reading "Oops! Someone has been forgetting to pay, was it you? My business relies on your honesty!

Any ideas on locating honor boxes and bulk candy machines? Want to use a locator but I now see that is money that would be better used buying more machines or. Honor boxes. I don't know what to say or what to do. Please help
if you are looking for a locator for honor boxes i can refer you to a guy here in fl who is very good. PM me ill send you his details, hes been locating these type things since the early 80s. he does them in person and will come to you. he also does gumball/bulk candy. he can knock out about 20 locations in half a day or so
locating them yourself is pretty easy just always keep one in your car (without chocolate) and just try asking around where ever you go. strip malls are good, check out nail places, barber shop, etc.. car repair/mechanic shops, banks have been good for me too. i even have some in retail stores. basically anywhere with 6-20 employees.
i am trying to develop a script to locate them over the phone because i think it might be easier than driving around but with a lower ratio of placements. if you want to try that i have a list of leads for all of florida which includes biz name, address, phone, fax, contact name, # of employees and type of biz, i can sell you areas you might be interested.
OH PS --
Here is a sales pitch RJT came up with for honor boxes and posted on another forum. I use this pitch almost verbatim, its a good starting place adapt it to your own style.
Honor Box Salesman: Mrs. Smith I am Mr. Honor Box Salesman and was wondering if you guys currently had an type of snacks available to your employees.
Mrs Smith: No we dont, we area small office and vending companies want give us a machine. Plus we really dont have the room for a machine.
Honor Box Salesman: My company offers small offices a way to have snacks. We do honor box snacks that are small and hold about 80 items. We place it for free and you just buy what you want. We service it every couple weeks with fresh snacks.
Mrs. Smith: What happens if the box comes up short?
Honor Box Salesman: We take care of any shortages and you are NOT responsible. However, if it comes up short often we would have to pull the box out. I encourage people to keep it close by so someone who can keep and eye on it. Let your employees know if it comes up short then the company will remove the box and no more snacks.
Mrs. Smith: Really? We are not responsible for any loss? Maybe we should try one because my employees are always saying they wish they had some snacks. What are your prices?
Honor Box Salesman: We have two price points $1.00 for candy, cookies, and pastry. .75 for chips and crackers. We even have a few healthy selections. I can show you a box if you like? I will even bring you a couple free samples to try.
Mrs. Smith: Wow, that does have some great variety in it. So no cost to us for rent or anything? Just pay for what we eat? We are not responsible for any loss?
Mr. Honor Box Salesman: Yes ma'am that is correct. No contract to sign or anything. How about I leave you this box and we try it for a few weeks to see how it goes. If it dosent work out no big deal. You never know until you try it.
Mrs. Smith: Ok sure. I know my people are going to love it they are always asking for snacks.
Mr. Honor Box Salesman: Here is my card and my number is on the box also. If you have a problem or it needs servicing before I come back be sure and call me. Remember it usually works best if the box is kept where someone kinda keeps and eye on it. I wouldn’t want a couple of people to ruin it for your employees. I want to thank you for your time and I appreciate the business. Here, try these new chips we are carrying and let me know what you think next time I am in.

a few notes, carry the box in with you, i have never been able to close an account if i left the box in the car. also his prices are an example and i would not use those prices.
