Is there a book that can teach one how to fix a soda or snack machine? Anyone have any recommendations on reading material? I have a bunch of vending machines on locations, but I am trying to learn more on how to fix the machines instead of paying 65 dollars for service charges.

wow...ok... i am going to try to answer this one.......the industry and everyone in it would absolutely love a book that would answer all your vending repair questions.....unfortunately it doesnt exist.......vending machines are like cars....every manufacturer does it different.....you say you have a "bunch" of machines on location.....lets start there.....pick your current favorite pop and snack machine.....read the serial plate on it...then either find them on your computer and request service manuals,,, or post back here a specific type and MODEL #.......then we can better guide you......
#2-----trying to avoid repair costs is always a good thing, in fact, you "need" to know to survive.......most companies/distributors offer free tech support by phone also....i know we do......" but if you call for such support be prepared......make, model serial# and be in front of the machine you want assistance with.....this is the most successful if you desire help......just my .02

If it helps when you have a service guy fix your machines pay very close attention to what he does and learn from him. Feel free to ask him questions. Otherwise vending machines in general work off similar principles.
very general list
1- coin mech or bill changer takes money
2- control board receives signal on money. Single price machines the coin mech says it is ok to vend, modern machines the coin mech reports how much money
3- control board sends signal to start motor
4- motor makes a complete rotation (or partial rotation in drink machines) then a switch on the motor shuts it off.
5- repeat
If you have a machine you can tinker with then look at it, follow the wires, look at the motors & switches, etc. and learn how it works.
Common problems are a dirty coin mech (learn how to take it apart and clean it), dirty dollar bill reader (clean it or get a cleaning kit), bad motors and/or switches (learn what they look like and how to replace them), for cold machines compressor problems (learn about the thermostat and what you can repair yourself and what you can't).
Instructions for checking and repairing most of these problems have already been asked in these forums so consider these forums your book.
