In the late 1990s, MEI introduced "Flashport technology" into their units. This option allows all Flashport models to be upgraded to any new currency changes, for example, the new fives. That way, instead of buying a complete new unit every time the bill design changes, you can upgrade your current units for next to nothing, or do it yourself.

Before flashport units, you did not have to buy a complete unit, just an update chip which was about $10. That worked fine until the manufacture would not support older models. So flashport, as stated above, allows updates to be added anytime. You still must have a BPM (Bill Programming Module) to support this.
